It you are having trouble with apple yield look at what trees you have in the way of pollinators, a good tree with a long pollinating season is the Grimes Golden.We have experienced good yield by incorporating the Grimes Golden into our nursery.
If you have an old apple tree,that you would like to keep, perhaps it was your grandparents or is a particularly good apple. We will graft the tree for you. Call for simple instructions on help preserving your heirloom trees.
February is a good time to prune your apple trees. The cold temperatures will keep viruses at bay. When you prune the tree your cuts provide a path of entry for virus. While it is okay to prune an apple tree anytime, months such as February are the preferred time to prune.
We are toying with the idea of placing gravel under our apple trees. We have heard it may be a deterent to pest.
